Our Story

2 : 17 a.m., Tuesday. Phone lit up, eyes blinded, another hour lost to ceiling-staring. After three identical nights I clocked the pattern: every post-midnight screen flash delayed sleep by roughly 60 minutes.

I'd already cycled through blackout curtains, meditation apps, and months on 3-mg melatonin. The tablets helped—until vivid dreams, morning fog, and zero effect on screen nights made them a non-starter. I needed a natural fix that worked with my digital life, not against it.

Blue-blocking glasses existed, but they were built for daytime eye-strain, not the critical pre-sleep window. They leaked side-glare, weighed a ton, and blocked only a slice of the spectrum. So I built my own.

The SleepSpec Journey

SleepSpec brand timeline from the 2017 First Spark through the 2025 launch and future plans
2017

First Spark

At university I tried "anti-blue" lenses marketed for eye-strain—and slept better for the first time in years.

2023

Light-Bulb Moment

Five years of sleep-tracking proved the 60-minute penalty for late-night phone checks. I began sketching a lens that blocks >98 % of disruptive wavelengths and wraps wide to kill side-glare.

2024

Deep-Dive R&D

Full access to academic journals, 6 prototypes (one so red my sister still laughs), and a 30 % weight reduction later, the design was locked.

2025

Launch

SleepSpec debuts with transparent science summaries, feather-light frames, and prices that respect healthy habits.

Future

The Sleep Revolution

New tints for gamers and shift-workers • Classroom light-hygiene kits • Independent sleep-lab trials • Community-driven roadmap.

The Science Behind SleepSpec

Graph comparing SleepSpec blue-light blocking across the 400–520 nm range with standard blue-light glasses

Unlike daytime computer glasses, SleepSpecs are engineered exclusively for the final 1–2 hours before bed—the window when blue light is most lethal to melatonin.

Our optics block over 9 % of the 450-490 nm band, the spectrum proven to suppress melatonin and delay REM.

What Users Report:

  • Faster sleep onset – natural melatonin flow restored
  • Fewer night-time awakenings – deeper cycles, less tossing
  • Morning vitality – no pill hangover, no extra coffee

What Sets Us Apart

Peer-Reviewed Specs

>98 % block rate in the exact wavelengths universities test for sleep labs.

Fair Pricing

Premium sleep optics for £30. Health shouldn't bankrupt you.

Radical Transparency

No miracle-cure hype. Just clear data and honest limitations.

Meet the Founder

Angus Kekwick

Sleep-Science Advocate • Relentless Tester

Chronic light sleeper since childhood, Angus logged nightly metrics for five years and discovered the one-hour "phone penalty." After trying 20+ blue-light brands—too heavy, too fragile, too leaky—he designed SleepSpec.

Angus holds a degree in health optimisation and spends weekends decoding chronobiology papers so you don't have to.

"We live in a lit-up world. Instead of ditching our devices, let's out-smart the light."
  • 6 prototypes shattered, scratched, or hilariously orange before final launch
  • Side-effect-free alternative to melatonin tablets and groggy mornings
  • On a mission to help one million people reclaim their nights by 2030
