Your Glasses & The Science
About the Glasses
Are SleepSpec glasses a medical device?
No. SleepSpec is a lifestyle product, not a medical device. The glasses are made to support a calmer, more screen-friendly evening wind-down. They're not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition, and individual results vary.
How is SleepSpec different from other blue light glasses?
Most blue light glasses are made for daytime screen comfort and filter only a small part of the blue spectrum. SleepSpec is built for the evening. Our deep amber lenses block 98%+ of light across the 400 to 520nm range, the blue-green wavelengths most associated with suppressed melatonin, so they're designed for the hour or two before bed rather than all-day wear.
Which wavelengths do the lenses block, and by how much?
Our deep amber lenses block 98%+ of light across the 400 to 520nm range, with the strongest filtering in the blue-green wavelengths most linked to melatonin suppression. You can see the full spectral graph on the product page.
How do SleepSpec glasses work?
Worn 1 to 2 hours before bed, they filter the blue-green light from screens and indoor lighting that can interfere with your body's natural wind-down. This helps your evening feel calmer and more screen-friendly. Individual results vary.
Can I wear SleepSpec glasses over my prescription glasses?
They're not designed as fit-over glasses, but the frames are fairly wide and sit over many standard prescription frames. We don't currently offer a prescription lens option.
Is there research behind this?
Yes. Independent researchers, not SleepSpec, have studied amber and blue-blocking lenses worn in the evening. Columbia University researchers, for example, found that adults with insomnia symptoms who wore amber lenses for two hours before bed slept better than those wearing clear lenses. SleepSpec wasn't part of these studies. They show the effect of reducing disruptive evening blue-green light, which is what our lenses are built to do. You'll find the studies we reference on our Science page.
Wearing Them
When should I wear them?
Put them on 1 to 2 hours before bed, whenever you're looking at screens or sitting under bright indoor lighting in the evening.
Can I keep using my screens while wearing them?
Yes, that's the idea. Read, watch TV, scroll or work as usual. The lenses do their job while you carry on with your evening.
Who are SleepSpec glasses for?
Anyone who uses screens in the evening, or finds it hard to settle after bright light at night: poor sleepers, night owls, shift workers, and people sensitive to light or glare before bed.
Are they suitable for teenagers?
Yes. They're a lifestyle product suitable for teens and adults. Younger eyes tend to let more blue-green light through, as the eye's lens naturally filters more of it with age, so evening screen light can have a greater effect on younger people.
Can I wear SleepSpec glasses while driving?
No, please don't wear them while driving, especially at night. The deep amber tint can make it harder to see traffic lights and other signals clearly. They're made for indoor evening use before bed.
Blue Light & Sleep
What is blue light and how does it affect sleep?
Blue light, particularly in the blue-green range where the body clock is most sensitive (around 480nm), is the part of the spectrum most likely to suppress melatonin, the hormone that helps you feel sleepy. A lot of it in the evening, from screens and bright lighting, can tell your brain it's still daytime and delay your natural wind-down.
What is circadian rhythm and why does it matter?
It's your body's roughly 24-hour internal clock, governing your sleep-wake cycle and other daily rhythms. Keeping it steady supports better sleep, energy, mood and focus.
