Night shifts

Blue light glasses for night shift workers

For night shift workers, blue light glasses go on before your daytime sleep, not in the evening. Wear deep-amber glasses indoors for the last 1–2 hours before you sleep, whatever the hour, and take them off at lights-out. Never wear them while driving, including the drive home.

When should a night shift worker wear blue light glasses?

Indoors, for the last 1–2 hours before you sleep. If you get home at 7.30 and go to bed at 9, put them on when you get in and keep them on through breakfast, your phone or the television. Take them off at lights-out.

Home at 07:40. The glasses go on indoors, before your daytime sleep.

Can I wear them on the way home?

Not if you are driving. The deep-amber tint can make it harder to see traffic lights and other signals clearly. They are made for indoor use, so put them on once you are home.

Can I wear them during a shift?

SleepSpec is made for the wind-down before sleep, not for the shift itself. Put the glasses on when the working night is over, for the last 1–2 hours before you sleep.

Do I still need a dark bedroom?

Yes. The glasses come off at lights-out, so they do nothing once you are in bed. In the daytime, keeping the room dark is a job for blackout curtains or an eye mask.

What do the lenses block?

SleepSpec’s deep-amber sleep glasses block 98% of blue-green light across 400–520 nm. Blue-rich light before sleep can suppress melatonin and push the body clock, and sleep, later, and the body clock is especially sensitive to light around 480–490 nm. The glasses are non-prescription and cost £29.99 with free UK delivery.

Are blue light glasses good for night shift?

They suit the routine: one pair, worn indoors before your daytime sleep, with nothing to charge or set up. A 2021 systematic review found evidence for quicker sleep onset among people with sleep disorders, jet lag or variable shift-work schedules, although later reviewers found the overall sleep evidence mixed. Those studies did not test SleepSpec, and individual results vary. SleepSpec is not a medical device. The research page lists the studies.

  • They genuinely made a difference to my sleep. They feel so lightweight you forget you're wearing them. The warm tint is quite strong which takes getting used to but honestly they do what they're supposed to.

  • The frame is light but feels solid. I can wear them for hours no problem.

  • The case they come in is way better that any seeing eye glasses I have bought at 10x the price! A hard, hinged case with a magnetic lid that closes with a nice sound. It really is great value for money. Recommended.
