Five reasons · 2-minute read

You’re not going to stop scrolling before bed. You don’t have to.

The advice is no screens before bed, and most of us ignore it. Deep-amber sleep glasses change the light instead of the habit. Five things to know before you try a pair.

A person in bed at night using a phone while wearing SleepSpec glasses, the room and the screen lit only in warm amber.

1. Your screen keeps the sun up.

What your body clock sees at midnight.

That is why the advice is “no screens before bed”. Bright, blue-rich light tells your body clock it is still day. In the evening it can hold back melatonin, your sleep hormone, and push sleep later.

2. Everyday blue-light glasses are made for screens, not sleep.

Clear lenses are built for daytime comfort. Most filter a fraction of blue light and taper off around 480 nm, the point where your body clock is most sensitive. SleepSpec covers the full 400–520 nm band, which is why the lenses are deep amber.

3. You keep your screens. The view turns amber.

SleepSpec glasses held up to a laptop at night. Through the deep-amber lenses the harbour scene turns warm, and the boats and buildings stay sharp.

The tint is strong at first, on purpose. Text, TV and phone screens stay readable, and your eyes adjust within a few minutes, much as they do with tinted sunglasses. Colours in films, games and photo work will look different.

4. Amber lenses have been tested by sleep researchers.

Sleep, measured by wrist tracker

Shechter et al., 2018 · Journal of Psychiatric Research

In a randomised trial, adults with insomnia symptoms wore amber lenses for two hours before bed. They slept about 29 minutes longer than with clear lenses, and their insomnia scores improved.

The trial tested amber lenses, not SleepSpec. Individual results vary.

5. Light enough to keep on until lights-out.

Sleep glasses only work if you keep them on. The frame weighs 23 g, with built-in nose pads and spring hinges. No app, no charger: put them on 1–2 hours before bed and take them off at lights-out.

“The frame is light but feels solid. I can wear them for hours no problem.”

  • They genuinely made a difference to my sleep. They feel so lightweight you forget you're wearing them. The warm tint is quite strong which takes getting used to but honestly they do what they're supposed to.

  • The case they come in is way better that any seeing eye glasses I have bought at 10x the price! A hard, hinged case with a magnetic lid that closes with a nice sound. It really is great value for money. Recommended.

Something we have not covered? Talk to us

  • When should I wear them?

Put them on 1–2 hours before bed, whenever you are looking at screens or sitting under bright indoor lighting. Take them off at lights-out.

  • Can I wear them over prescription glasses?

Usually, yes, though they are not a dedicated fit-over model. Fit depends on the shape and size of your frames, so it isn’t guaranteed. Prescription lenses aren’t available.

  • What if they are not right for me?

Return them within 30 days of delivery for a refund, in resellable condition with the case, cloth and guide. Return postage is yours unless the item is faulty, damaged or arrived incorrect. This does not affect your statutory rights.
