Christmas gifts for night shift workers

The most useful gifts for someone who works nights make the hours after a shift easier: winding down, then sleeping while it’s light outside. Our pick is SleepSpec, deep-amber glasses worn indoors for the last 1–2 hours before sleep, whatever the hour. They cost £29.99 with free UK delivery and arrive in a presentation box.

1. SleepSpec sleep glasses

After a night shift, the wind-down happens in daylight and under bright indoor lights. SleepSpec’s deep-amber lenses block 98% of blue-green light across 400–520 nm, so they can keep scrolling, watching TV or having breakfast while the glasses filter the light. If they get home at 7.30 and go to bed at 9, the glasses go on when they get in and come off at lights-out.

They’re for indoors only: never for driving, including the drive home. In the box: the glasses, a hard case, a cleaning cloth, instructions and a presentation box.

2. A blackout eye mask

The glasses come off at lights-out, and then the room needs to be dark, which is hard at midday. An eye mask is the simplest fix. Look for one that blocks light around the nose and stays comfortable for a full day’s sleep.

3. Blackout blinds or curtain linings

For a bedroom that has to stay dark at midday. Measure the window first, or choose a temporary blackout blind that fixes to the glass.

4. A warm, dimmable bedside lamp

For the hour before sleep, it helps to lower bright overhead lighting and choose warmer lamps. A dimmable bedside lamp with a warm bulb keeps the room’s light low while they unwind.

5. Earplugs or a white-noise machine

Daytime is noisy: traffic, deliveries, the school run. Foam or silicone earplugs make a small stocking filler. A white-noise machine covers background sound for anyone who can’t sleep with earplugs in.

  • They genuinely made a difference to my sleep. They feel so lightweight you forget you're wearing them. The warm tint is quite strong which takes getting used to but honestly they do what they're supposed to.

  • The frame is light but feels solid. I can wear them for hours no problem.

  • The case they come in is way better that any seeing eye glasses I have bought at 10x the price! A hard, hinged case with a magnetic lid that closes with a nice sound. It really is great value for money. Recommended.
